Batik – Patena Moesker

Learn about wax, dyes and colour whilst creating a picture or a pattern onshimmering fabric. Having returned from time in Indonesia, Patena has new information and inspiration that will guide you in the creation of something to wear or something to frame.

What you will need

Chair

Old clothes drawing pencils(2B and 4B) and drawing paper

2x1m length of washed fine pure cotton fabric. Silk  Habotai if they wish All fabric should be washed

Other fabric scraps/offcuts for practice(natural, cellulose based fabrics)

a timber frame 50cm x50 cm (ish)

thumb tacks

roll of narrow masking tape

3 old towels

6 plastic shopping bags or snap lock bags to take damp work home in

3 metres of black tradesman plastic,

2 pairs of rubber gloves,

drawn or collected images you may wish to transfer into textile designs

This course is suitable for beginners to moderately competent. Artists, fibre workers, textile designers and quiltmakers would all enjoy. Students may wish to work in cotton or venture into silk(which is aways the best). They will use the traditional TJANTING tool and brushes, and will be shown the CHAP(pronounced “cap”) stamps used for multiple printing. Students choose their own images but guidance will be given if sought. this is an introductory course however students may discuss more advance work and concepts for future classes.
